A vulnerability has been discovered in XZ Utils, which could lead to denial of service.
| Package | Arch | Vulnerable | Unaffected |
|---|---|---|---|
| app-arch/xz-utils | * | < 5.6.4-r1 | >= 5.6.4-r1 |
XZ Utils is free general-purpose data compression software with a high compression ratio.
A use-after-free has been discovered in XZ utils. Please review the CVE identifier referenced below for details.
The multithreaded .xz decoder in liblzma has a bug where invalid input can at least result in a crash. The effects include heap use after free and writing to an address based on the null pointer plus an offset. Applications and libraries that use the lzma_stream_decoder_mt function are affected. It's unlikely one can achieve more than a crash if xz is built with PIE on a 64-bit system especially, as is done in Gentoo by default.
There is no known workaround at this time.
All XZ utils users should upgrade to the latest version:
# emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=app-arch/xz-utils-5.6.4-r1"
A backdoor has been discovered in XZ utils that could lead to remote compromise of systems.
| Package | Arch | Vulnerable | Unaffected |
|---|---|---|---|
| app-arch/xz-utils | * | = 5.6.0, = 5.6.1 | < 5.6.0, > 5.6.1 |
XZ Utils is free general-purpose data compression software with a high compression ratio.
A backdoor has been discovered in XZ utils. Please review the CVE identifier referenced below for details.
Our current understanding of the backdoor is that is does not affect Gentoo systems, because 1. the backdoor only appears to be included on specific systems and Gentoo does not qualify; 2. the backdoor as it is currently understood targets OpenSSH patched to work with systemd-notify support. Gentoo does not support or include these patches; Analysis is still ongoing, however, and additional vectors may still be identified. For this reason we are still issuing this advisory as if that will be the case.
There is no known workaround at this time.
All XZ utils users should upgrade to the latest fixed version, or downgrade to the latest version before the backdoor was introduced:
# emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">app-arch/xz-utils-5.6.1"
# emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose "<app-arch/xz-utils-5.6.0"
A vulnerability has been discovered in GNU Gzip and XZ Utils' grep helpers which could result in writes to arbitrary files.
| Package | Arch | Vulnerable | Unaffected |
|---|---|---|---|
| app-arch/gzip | * | < 1.12 | >= 1.12 |
| app-arch/xz-utils | * | < 5.2.5 | >= 5.2.5 |
GNU Gzip is a popular data compression program. XZ Utils is free general-purpose data compression software with a high compression ratio.
GNU Gzip and XZ Utils' grep helpers do not sufficiently validate certain multi-line file names.
In some cases, writing to arbitrary files such as shell initialization files can be escalation to remote code execution.
Ensuring only trusted input is passed to GNU Gzip and XZ Utils' grep helpers minimizes the potential impact.
All GNU Gzip users should upgrade to the latest version:
# emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=app-arch/gzip-1.12"
All XZ Utils users should upgrade to the latest version:
# emerge --sync # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=app-arch/xz-utils-5.2.5"
